My Approach to Counseling:

I have spent the past fourteen years of my life studying, training, and practicing in the field of mental health. My experience has led me to believe that you, not me or anyone else, is ultimately the expert of your life. Your solutions and answers can be found within. My role as your counselor is to walk with you, as a companion, in this journey. Together, we can discover the solutions and answers that work for you and your experiences. I am trained to diagnose and treat mental health concerns, which can sometimes inform the process, I will not dictate what is good, bad, right or wrong for your unique set of circumstances. We will reach a solution together. Therefore, I believe that therapy is a useful process for everyone, not just those experiencing severe mental health concerns. There is no such thing as a problem that is unimportant, strange, unmanageable, or unworthy. I believe that counseling is a place for exploring your concerns to obtain a better understanding and appreciation for yourself. If you decide that certain behaviors no longer serve you, I can help you identify ways in which you may be able to change those behaviors to live your best life, with intention.

Theoretical Perspective:

Clinicians and researchers often require large books to describe such topics. I will try to summarize some very complex information in 3 paragraphs and I ask that you forgive any overly technical, academic jargon. I describe my counseling as attachment informed, mindfulness based, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) within a social constructivist framework.

In other words, I begin with the assumption that we all develop beliefs and meanings about ourselves, others, and the world around us; which is called our narrative. Our narrative is not developed in isolation. Our  interactions and social roles are mutually constructed by us and those around us. We process the information that we receive from the world around and use it to shape our narrative. As such, we must consider how the role of our various intersectional identities (i.e., race, culture, gender, age, social-class, ability, sexuality, worldview, spiritual beliefs, etc.) influences our own experiences as well as how it influences the counselor/client relationship.

Our narrative plays a central role in our lives as it guides all of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; all of which are important because they govern our experiences and inform our decision making. Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other in a two-way, reciprocal relationship. Which means that by intervening at any or all of these areas has the potential to change the very reality that we live in.  Counseling provides the safe, trusting, and supportive environment necessary to undertake the courageous process of practicing new behaviors. of examining our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and narratives to identify how those may be inhibiting or contributing to our ability to live the life that we want to live.
